I had such high hopes for the season. As I wrote in that blog, the recruits that UT gets are so highly touted that I see no reasons for bad seasons. I can understand mediocre seasons but not a season like we are experiencing now. At this point, the Horns are 4-5 with 3 games left. At this point, there is a strong possibility the Horns will not even be bowl eligible.

To be bowl eligible, the Horns would have to win 2 of the 3 remaining games. That is a tall order. The remaining games are against Oklahoma State, Florida Atlantic and Texas A&M. Oklahoma State is going to be tough. They are now in first the Big 12 South. Florida Atlantic is a wild card and they have given the Horns trouble before. The A&M game is always tough depite the records of the teams. It is on Thanksgiving night. It is in Austin but lately that has not been much of an advantage.

To get a similar record, you have to go back to 1996 (8-5) & 1997 (4-7) when Horns were coached by John Mackovic. He was fired after the 1997 season. The only terrible season under Mack Brown's watch is the 1999 season when the team went 9-5. From 2001 - 2009, the Horns had at least 10 wins. There were "rebuilding" seasons during that time but they never performed this poorly. Next I will blog on what I think is up.

Hook 'Em!

Closer to Football Season & Predictions

Well, we are down to 15 days to kickoff! UT kicks off against Rice in Reliant Stadium at 2:30 September 4th. I am so excited! I also recently received something from Coach Brown that will be a very special keepsake the rest of my life. A great friend of mine got Mack to write me a letter in honor of my 50th birthday. It was an awesome letter and it was amazing how much he "knew" about me! I was so appreciative of my friend going to the effort to get it and frame it and also equally appreciative to Coach Brown for taking the time to write it! Now I am ready for some football.

UT has a rebuilding team this year but thanks to awesome recruiting by Coach Brown, they should be well covered with talent on both sides of the line. I just read an article that indicated that the defensive backfield may be the best in the Big 12 if not the country. They will be lead by junior Aaron Williams. Aaron is from McNeill Round Rock, TX. He is a 2nd year letterman and is 6'1" - 195 pounds and is ready to fill the shoes of of defensive backfield star Earl Thomas. He is touted as NFL material.

Over the next couple of weeks, I will be looking at different parts of the team and highlighting a player. I will also take a look at some of the other teams UT plays this fall. Hook 'Em!

Well, it is that time again. Football season is around the corner. UT kicks off in 31 days. They place Rice at Reliant Stadium at 2:30. I am so excited that we are this close. UT has lots of positive things on their side after losing to Bama in the BCS Championship game.

First great thing is that our new quarterback Garrett Gilbert looked pretty good for freshman in the Bama game. He gained unbelievable experience playing on that stage. That stage will make the OU game seem trivial. Now I am not saying he should not get excited about the OU game but he played on the biggest stage of all and did not have a terrible experience. He almost won!

Another positive thing for this season is that UT gets Tech out of the way in September. That will help the October schedule and they will get an early test. Usually they are never tested in September. They also get another September test with UCLA. I am not sure what UCLA has to offer this year but at least they have been powers before.

OU is in early October and it is followed up by Nebraska. That should be a tough couple of weeks. UT has to play Nebraska in Nebraska. I am sure there will be a lot of scores to settle with the departure of Nebraska from the Big 12. As usual they end the season with A&M in Austin on Thanksgiving Day.

Can not wait for September 4th to get here. Check back for regular updates.

Recruiting for the following Classes

Mack Brown is one of the best recruiters in my opinion. The class he just signed (seniors in high school) was recognized as the second best in the county. The best class was deemed Florida's class of recruits. That is amazing to me that a kid is willing to take a gamble at Florida given all of the uncertainty there with the coach having health issues.

UT got some very impressive players for the fall. Colt's younger brother is going to be on the team as is Jordan Shipley's brother. I hope they have the same chemistry that their older brothers had. The also got a great player from Plano that was heavily recruited. His name is Jackson Jeffcoat and he is a defensive end. DeMarco Cobbs is considered by the experts to make an impact in the fall. He plays defensive back.

I am already looking forward to the fall. As I told someone the other day, I am always hopeful when a new season comes around.

Back to Blogging & Super Bowl

It has been a bit since I last blogged. My last entry was done the day of the BCS Championship game. As you may know, the game did not turn out in favor of my Longhorns. I have to say, the last thing I ever thought about happening that night, was that our star quarterback would get hurt on the first UT possession and was out for the game. It was such a disheartening game in a way but once I got over the disappointment, I realized it provided a lot of hope for the future.

The freshman QB Garrett Gilbert played an great game, especially given that he is a true freshman and had very little playing time. He almost brought them back. He is going to be a great player I think.

As for my thoughts on the Super Bowl tonight, I am pulling for the Saints all the way. The quarterback for the Saints is Drew Brees. He graduated from the same high school I did (many years before him). He led the Austin Westlake Chaparrals to their only state championship in '96. He then went on to Purdue and had a successful career there. San Diego drafted him first in the second round in 2001. He then went to the Saints in 2006 and had a very successful career there. It will be great for the city of New Orleans given the devastation from Hurricane Katrina. Living in Houston, we know what hurricanes can do and we had many from New Orleans come here as a result of Katrina. Geaux Saints for the Who Dat Nation!

Basics of Football for Women - Part 4

This blog today will focus on the main penalties you will see in a college football game. The people on the field wearing black & white striped shirts are the officials and they are the ones that can call the penalties. They can call penalties against the offense or defense. Below are the common penalties:

Delay of game - the play clock will start and the offense has 25 seconds to get the play started by snapping the ball. If they fail to do so, there is a 5 yard penalty.

Offsides - a defensive play crossed the line of scrimmage (where the ball is sitting) and made contact with an offensive player or did not get back behind the line of scrimmage. This is also a 5 yard penalty.

Illegal procedure - an offensive lineman moved before play started or a receiver who was in motion did not move parallel with the line of scrimmage. This is a 5 yard penalty.

Holding - an offensive lineman used his hands while blocking. This is a 10 yard penalty.

Facemask - this is where a player tries to tackle someone by yanking on the facemask of the helmet. This is a 5 yard penalty if accidental and 15 yards if it is flagrant.

Unsportsman-Like Conduct - this says it all and is a 15 yard penalty

Clipping, Chop Block & Illegal Block - this is a block that occurs from the back. This is a 10 yard penalty

Unnecessary Roughness, Roughing the Passer & Roughing the Kicker - tackling someone after they no longer have the ball. This is a 15 yard penalty.

These are some of the penalties. If a penalty is called on a team, the other team can accept or decline the penalty. Usually the penalty is stepped off from the original line of scrimmage. There are exceptions and that is a topic for another day.

Basics of Football for Women - Part 3

The last blog posted, I indicated that I would explain how a coach decides when to punt the ball on 4th down or run a play. The coach will look at several factors. The first how many yards does the offense need to get the first down. If they have 10 yards to go, most likely they will punt unless it is close to the end of the game and they are behind. If time is about to run out and they are behind in points, they will run a play as there is not much to lose. If the offense has 1 yard or less, they might go for it depending on where they are on the field. The issue with this decision is that if the offense does not make it on 4th down when a play is run, the offense turns it over to the other team where the offense finished the play.

A coach might also choose to fake a punt. The offense lines up like they are going to punt the ball and then run a play. The consequences are the same not making the yardage. It is the same as running a play on 4th down.

Tomorrow's post will be about penalties. This will get you to the point of being able to watch the BCS Championship game with a bit more knowledge. Maybe it will make it more fun to watch.

Basics of Football for Women - Part 2

I'll explain some more terminology today. At each end of the field of play are the end zones. This is where the teams can score touchdown points. The offense comes down the field with running and passing plays and their goal is to get in the end zone and score a touchdown. A touchdown is when the ball crosses the plane of the end zone while in possession of the offensive player. The player does not have to cross the plane of the end zone. The team is awarded 6 points for this type of score. If a team does not get in the end zone and they are close enough, the offense may elect to kick a field goal. In a field goal, the kicker attempts to kick the ball through the goal posts which are sitting at the back of the end zone. If he is successful, the offensive team gets 3 points.

If a team gets a touchdown, they get the opportunity for extra points. They can attempt to kick the ball through the goal posts and if successful, the team gets 1 point. They can also go for a 2 point attempt by executing a play. If they get into the end zone during this, they are given 2 points.

Once a team scores points, they will then kick to the other team and the other team gets an attempt to go down the field and score. As I stated in Part 1, there are 4 - 15 minute quarters plus halftime. Teams are given 3 timeouts per half. The clock stops in college for the following situations: timeout, incomplete pass, penalties, play reviews and injuries. The clock will also be stopped if a team gets a first down (gets the 10 yards or more within 4 attempts) to move the markers but then restarts upon the markers being placed.

Part 3 will discuss how a team decides to punt the ball on 4th down or run a play. I will also explain common penalties.

Basics of Football for Women

With all of the bowl games that happened in the last month and a few more to go, I thought I would put some basics out there for women (or men) that really do not understand football. The big game is Thursday night and there will be many parties out there to go to to watch the BCS championship.

First thing to know is that there is an offense and a defense team on the field. The defense and the offense each have 11 men. The offense is the team with the ball. Of course, their objective is to score points. The field of play is 100 yards long and 50 yards wide. The offense has 4 tries to get 10 yards. The offense will do this using a passing (throwing) play or a running play. When the player with the ball is tackled on the ground, the referree will whistle the play dead. If they do not get the 10 yards in the first 3 attempts, they have the option to either punt (kick) the ball to the other team or they can try to get the remaining yards with a running or throwing play. In my next posting, I will explain a bit on how the decision is made to punt or run a play.

The defense is the team that is trying to stop the offense from scoring. They will try to stop plays from succeeding and also try to cause a turnover. A turnover is either a fumble or an interception. A fumble is where an offensive player is running with the ball and he loses the ball out of his hands. The defense will try to get the fumble so their offense can take over. An interception is where a defensive guy catches the pass from the opposing team.

One more basic fact is that the game consists of four 15 minute quarters plus a halftime (time when the bands perform and the players go to the locker room). This means that there is 60 minutes of football but with TV timeouts, penalties, clock stops and instant replays, a game can be around 4 hours. Stay tuned tomorrow for more basics about football.

New Years Bowl Games

When I was a kid, we would get very excited about New Years Day because that was the day the big bowl games were played. There were a few bowl games the week leading up to New Years Day. Now, with over 30 bowl games, they go into the first week of the New Year. It makes the New Years bowl watching not such a big deal.

I am very excited this year about the bowl experience as UT will be playing in the biggest bowl game. UT (#2) plays Alabama (#1) for the first time since 1982. UT won that game 14-12. This year's game takes on new meaning for our family. In our almost 22 years of marriage, Steve's Alabama team will take on my Longhorns for the National Championship. We are both very passionate supporters of our team. It should be an interesting week in our house. Our son has decided to remain neutral.

I am thinking of blogging on college football from a woman's perspective. For many years it was played on Thanksgiving Day. It then moved to Friday after Thanksgiving but thankfully it is back on Thanksgiving Day. This game is one of those that it does not matter what each of the school's record is, the teams should be prepared.

When I was growing up, it was a fairly lopsided series with the Longhorns being the one that usually won. We had some great friends that were Aggies. They always went to the game from Austin when it was played in Aggieland. One year my family along with another couple of families went in and decorated the Aggie family yard like it was a graveyard. UT, of course, won and our friends got to come home to the decorated yard. I think it added to their misery.

Ten years ago, the rivalry went a bit out of the game when both schools mourned the victims of bonfire at A&M. I was proud to be a Longhorn as there was a memorial at UT for the victims. I do think now that it has been 10 years, the rivalry is back and it will be a fun game this Turkey Day! We will have, if the weather is good, about 40,000 people come out and watch. There are over 180 entries and the parade lasts for about 2 miles on Main Street. Come on out and get in the holiday spirit. The theme this year is Holidays around the World. Roads close at 9:15. Hope to see you there.

Development of a UT Football Fanatic - Final

On December 6th, the final score of the UT vs. Arkansas game was 15-14 and UT won in the final minutes. We were screaming and jumping up and down. Our family friend Bob that was over to watch had sat in this one chair for the whole game. We had Mexican tile in the family room and he had jumped up so much that he had worn the stain of the Mexican tile with the chair.

Later that day, my parents took me down to the drag (Guadalupe Street in front of the university)to celebrate with all of the other fans. It was madhouse of people of all walks of life. You have to remember this was 1969. The smell of pot was around and someone even offered my dad a joint. He did of course turn it down. It was a blast to be down there with everyone. The tower was lit up in solid orange with a white "#1" on all four sides.

Sunday the team came home and my parents took me out to the airport to meet the team. It was just so exciting. The team loved the crowd. It was an awesome weekend. Texas went on on New Year's Day to beat Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl. UT was the national champions in all of the polls.

There was a down spot right after the Shootout in Arkansas. One of the team members, Freddie Steinmark, found out that he had a bone tumor in his leg. He had his leg amputated six days after the shootout. If you want to read an outstanding book, read about his journey from football player to having his leg amputated. It is a great book and is called "I Play to Win". Freddie passed away in June of 1971.

From the 1969 season I became a die hard UT football fanatic.

Development of a UT Football Fanatic, Part 3

December 6th, 1969 was an exciting day that I eagerly awaited all week. That morning I put on my UT James Street jersey and believe it or not, I had burnt orange jeans. I was ready for the game. It was played in Fayettville, Arkansas to a packed house. The Razorback fans all had their hog hats on and there were a good amount of Longhorn loyals there as was the Longhorn Band (Showband of the Southwest).

We had some family friends over to watch the game and plenty of food. We all watched intently on the game. At the end of 3 quarters, the game was not going well for the Longhorns as they were down 0-14. UT scored on the first play of the fourth quarter and then went for 2 and the game was now 8-14. Time was down to less than 5 minutes in the fourth and Texas made an unbelievable play. It was 4th and 3 on the 43. Texas called a timeout and Street went over to talk to Coach Royal. Royal called a pass play that they had only run 4 times all season and none had worked. The receiver chosen was not even the most dependable receiver.

Street goes back into the huddle and calls the play to pass to Peschel. Royal called the play based on what the Arkansas defense had been doing all game on big 3rd down plays. Royal played a hunch and guess what, it worked. Street threw a perfect pass, Peschel caught it and brought the ball to the 13 yard line. 2 plays later Bertelsen scored to tie it 14-14. Happy Feller kicked the extra point to make it 15-14 with 3:58 to play. Come back to hear the rest of the story.

Development of a UT Football Fanatic - Part 2

The week leading to the UT vs Arkansas Shootout was a blast. My parents allowed me to answer the phone differently that week. I was normally supposed to answer the phone "Prentice residence, Camille speaking". That week I got to change the way I answered the phone and I used "Beat Arkansas, Camille speaking". My parents also took me to the UT Pep Rally. There were so many people there in Memorial Stadium or at least it seemed like it to a 9 year old. The spirits were high, the team was pumped and everyone was ready to beat the Razorbacks. By then I knew the words to the "Eyes of Texas" and the "Texas Fight Song". I had a blast that night.

As we were leaving the stadium and walking on the track, Darrell Royal came up behind me and patted me on my favorite UT windbreaker. You have to realize that by this time I knew he was my hero. He was the coach at the time for the Longhorns and is still a legend there today as well in all of college football. After that pat on the back, I would not let my mother wash the jacket for a very long time. I was in heaven.

The rest of the week was full of anticipation. We prepared food for the watching party and waited for Saturday to arrive. Come back for the next posting to hear about the game.

Development of a UT Football Fanatic

I became a Longhorn fanatic in 1969 when I was 9. My dad started teaching me that fall about the game of football. I watched the UT games and the Cowboy games with him. The fall of 1969 was a special season. The Longhorns were poised for greatness that year. They played as a team. The Horns were led by quarterback James Street who was undefeated as the starting quarterback for the Longhorns. The Longhorns ran the wishbone. They defeated Oklahoma that year 27-17. They were off to a great start.

The Horns marched through the rest of the schedule to the Shootout with Arkansas. It was to be played in Fayetteville, Arkansas with a lot of attention as the game had been moved to the last weekend of the season for the celebration of the centennial of college football. Many were considering this the Game of the Century. It was so exciting to be in Austin leading up to the game. It provides a convenient Web-based platform that lets you send and read updates, called "tweets." Tweets run no more than 140 characters in length, and can be sent to subscribers, called "followers." You can update by going to your Twitter page, sending a message by phone, or via a Web plug-in.
Many companies use Twitter in conjunction with Facebook and other social media applications. It provides a means of periodically reaching out to people interested in your company with brief, minor updates or even big news.
In the best situations, Twitter acts as a clearinghouse of first-hand news, informative Web links, and insights into the activities of prominent leaders in everything from retail to Congress.
For example, Whole Foods keeps a lively and useful Twitter account here. (http://twitter.com/wholefoods) The Zappos CEO keeps his own Twitter account; so does Senator John McCain. (http://twitter.com/zappos, http://twitter.com/senjohnmccain )
But, as many Twitter users discover firsthand, this hobby can quickly turn into an all-consuming obsession. If you're not careful, you can end up Twittering about, say, the chorizo breakfast burrito you'd like to have, http://twitter.com/diiskrej/status/1577310161
or the symbolism behind cleaning your cat's litterbox.
http://twitter.com/reidstott/status/1578187119
As a small business owner, you want to project a professional, knowledgeable image to your universe of current and potential customers. In order to do that, here are some tips:
1.If you keep a corporate blog, you can have it automatically send an update to Twitter every time you post something new. That will encourage your Twitter followers to check out your blog, where they'll find useful information (you are posting useful information on your blog, right?).
2.Link to books, blogs, or items in the news that are relevant to your business.
3.Write about upcoming events, if you're hosting a lunchtime seminar or giving a presentation to your local Rotary Club, let people know.
4.If there's information you want to share with a customer, think about whether it might interest other people, too. Let's say you're a veterinarian treating a dog that just came in with heatstroke, you might tweet a few helpful tips for keeping your pets cool in the heat.
5.Sign up to follow Twitter users who are authorities on topics that interest you.
6.Don't overload readers with too many updates in a day.
Twitter can be a fun, easy way to reach out to customers and show people another side of your business. Just make sure it's the right side, and leave more personal musings to your personal Twitter account.

Virus Threat

Beware of a new virus threat that is currently going around the Internet.
